I don't know too many kids, or adults for that matter, who don't love pancakes. I don't know too many people who don't smile at the memory, or anticipation, of them. Pancakes & Jelly is inspired by the idea of creating smiles, with pancakes or other gifts that have been selected with love and care. I invite those who visit our web site to start a tradition of their own, or share the spirit of it with a gift. Maybe something as simple as Sunday morning breakfast today, can be the sweet memory of tomorrow. That is the feeling I want to deliver along with every one of my carefully selected gift baskets. It started with my childhood memory of Sunday mornings….every Sunday, my mother would drop my two brothers, four sisters and I off at church for the 9:00 a.m. service. While we were at church, my father would stay home and prepare Sunday breakfast. We weren't allowed to eat before attending church. So after church, we couldn't walk home fast enough, hungry in anticipation of the huge breakfast that awaited, complete with all the traditional breakfast foods like eggs and bacon with cheese. We had home fries & toast, along with pancakes, of course -- piles of pancakes. There were almost always left over pancakes. Later that day, my brother, sister and I would spread jelly on them, roll them up, and sit on the front stoop and eat them. I can still remember biting into the soft cakes and sweet jelly. I never gave much thought to our "Pancakes and Jelly" Sundays until a dear friend of mine named Johnny, who has since passed away, shared a different kind of gift with me. Johnny, or "Johnny B Good" to my daughter and I, had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. A remarkable person, a retired Navy officer and later, retired Sacramento Sheriff, he'd paid his dues. With just a few months to live, I would have understood if he had been angry and bitter. Yet Johnny was one of the nicest, kindest people I've ever met. With a heart of gold he made it easy to be his friend. I will forever be grateful for the blessing of his friendship. Shortly, before Johnny died, we were having a conversation about life. I was complaining about my life and the "bumps in the road," to this man who had so little time. Johnny shared his wisdom with me. Johnny said "Granted life is full of bumps in the road… ups and downs, good memories and bad. God knows they can all take their toll...if you let them. Think of one thing, or place, or time in your life that brought a smile to your face. It only takes one good memory to make you smile. When the ups seem to outweigh the downs, and the road is a little bumpier then you think you can handle, remember that one thing or place -- and put the smile back on your face."
